Damit wird ein grundlegender Text der Kirchen- und Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts für die weitere Forschung kritisch erschlossen. The Encyclical Pascendi dominici gregis (1907) is one of the most momentous papal documents. Through Pascendi Pius X imposed an antimodernist agenda on the Roman Catholic Church with theological, political and social implications, palpable until the Second Vatican Council and well beyond. For the first time the present volume offers an exhaustive reconstruction of the making of Pascendi, its inspirators and authors, their intentions, sources and concepts of enmity. The role of Pius X in the redaction process is also elucidated in a new way.
